The Client
Du Pont a global chemical and pharaceutical company were seeking tobuild a consumer
medical portal aimed at a pan european market. The portal was to include over
1000 articles on all types of medical issues, ailments and treatments to provide
a distinct competive edge to the portal 200 animations were to be created to support
the articles. The portal was intended to serve a pan european and north american
audience and each animation was produced in 7 languages.
My Role
I initially joined the project as a Flash animator involved in producing the animations,
I was promoted to producer and art director for the project, managing a team of
seven animators and illustrators and a medical editor.
The Project
The project was progressing very slowly - only 30 animations had been completed
in the first three months, consequently the responsibility for the management
of the project was handed to me. I immediately reorganised the whole structure
of the project, firstly by hiring more illustrators and reduced the number of
animators. A new medical editor to produce storyboards for each of the animations
was also brought in. I recalculated how long it would take to produce the remaining
animations and gave the client a revised estimate. On top of this I created a
project intranet in order to show the client the day by day progress of the project
and reassure them that the project would be completed according to my revised
estimates. I continued to do some animation and illustration where necessary and
also provided the art direction for the project.
The Outcome
The remaining 170 animations were completed on time and to budget according to
my revised schedules. The 170 animations were completed in the same time it took
to complete the first 30 with no drop in the standard of the output. The client
considered the animations to be the most sucessful part of the overall project.
